Outreach Ministry

St. John's bears God's light into the community in multiple ways.

Through our weekly offerings, we support Greater Spartanburg Ministries, Total Ministries, Mobile Meals, Habitat for HumanityHope Center for ChildrenSpartanburg Soup Kitchen, The Haven, and St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic

We believe that we are Christ's hands and feet in this world. We show God's love for Spartanburg and the world in lots of ways, including:

St. John's Outreach Ministries Backpack Buddies program provides food on the weekends to children at a local school that wouldn't otherwise have food available. We pack the food into plastic bags several times a month, then take it to the school to be put in the special backpacks that we provided.

Backpack Buddies began in September 2012 as a Servant Sunday project that quickly grew into a new ministry at St. John's.  When we first started we thought we could provide food on weekends to school children once a month for 75 children.  Little did we know the need in Spartanburg County for this ministry, and the number of hungry children.

2021 Update - We will soon be supporting children at Pine Street and Mary H. Wright Elementary Schools by providing food items for over 100 children.  If you would like to support this ministry with a financial contribution to help purchase the good items, please earmark your contribution as "Backpack Buddies." If you would like to volunteer your time to help pack, please contact Libby Fain at 864-978-5991 or Frank Rudisill at 864-316-2410.

Pine Street Elementary

On August 16, we will have a "coffee cart" in our parking lot with doughnuts, granola bars, juice and coffee to welcome the parent and kids back to school. We will also provide $5 gift cards for the teachers and staff at Pine Street with a hand written wish for a good year. We thanks Little River Coffee for the gift cards, the generosity of a Thrivent grant, as well as our Outreach budget to make this happen.

If you would like to help with the coffee cart on 8/16 or writing the cards to the teachers and staff of Pine Street, please Pastor Erin.

TOTAL Ministries

St. John's is pulling together to help 100 families. We will be working along side Morningside Baptist Church at their location at 891 S. Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.

Tuesday, November 9, 2021, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Wednesday, November 10, 2021, 8:30 AM to conclusion

We will partner with Morningside Baptist Church and TOTAL Ministries to purchase food.  Tina Nichols is heading up our food initiative. Then, we will ask our congregation for monetary contributions in lieu of providing food items. This way, we can distribute the same quantity and type of food to each family. We will need about 12 volunteers each day from St. John's and Morningside will also provide 12 volunteers.
