Response March 26th, 2020

Dear St. John’s Family

We write another letter to keep you updated and as informed as we can. In our March 16th letter we shared that we were suspending worship and programming until April 3rd. Due to the recent statement from Governor McMaster and the suggestion from Bishop Yoos we will be extending this suspension of worship and programming until the end of April.

“At this time, students, parents, and families should plan for South Carolina’s schools to remain closed through the month of April.” (from a statement released March 24, 2020, governor.sc.gov)

“The safety and wellbeing of all the baptized continue to be a top priority. Therefore, we will listen to the advice of the CDC, public health officials and our Governor about the ongoing need for social distancing and sheltering in place. Therefore, we should not be meeting in our sanctuaries on Sundays until such time as the quarantine is lifted.” (from a letter sent on March 24, 2020 to Deacons and Pastors of the SC Synod by the SC Synod Bishop’s office via email)

We understand and share in the disappointment and frustration some of you may be feeling at this time. We also realize that there may be some of you that hear this news as a relief. The struggle that we, as your leadership team feel, is being able to have the wisdom to make the most informed and compassionate decisions we can based on the best information and advice available.

The church office will continue to be open and our staff will be answering phones, making plans, cleaning facilities and taking care of the daily operations as best as we can. However, please know that we are not encouraging you to stop by and visit as we continue to practice social distancing and keeping our numbers small including Wednesdays and Sundays when we are recording worship.

If you want to drop off food for the TOTAL ministries collection, please stop by the PLC Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-12. We will continue providing online worship through our Facebook page and our website. As we continue to experience and monitor this COVID 19 we may have to adjust the style and presentation of worship.

We thank you for your patience, support and understanding as we all blaze this new trail together. We cannot do it on our own and we are grateful for God’s loving advice: “Jesus looks at [us] and says, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” (Matthew19:26) How inspiring it is to remember that God is with us and helping us face the unknown future.

We will continue to monitor this historical situation weekly and will keep the congregation as informed as we can. May God grant you comfort, rest, peace and good health.

Peace,

Pastor Mike Shackelford, Pastor Erin Morris, Rick Sprang, Virginia Ingram, Alexandra Lautenschlaeger, Amy Mezger, Nan Dempsey, Judy Drake, Edwina Otto, Frank Rudisill, Robert Barnes, Bob Scherer, Chad Dingman and Benji Mills.
